Re-registering a car in the Netherlands

We receive many inquiries about re-registering a car in the Netherlands. Wondering how to do it? Here’s a step-by-step guide to the process of changing your license plates.

Car taxes in the Netherlands – who needs to pay?

Are you unsure when you are required to pay BPM vehicle tax and when you need to pay road tax? Let us clarify!

BPM Vehicle Tax – This tax applies to vehicles imported from abroad. All individuals who have purchased a car outside the Netherlands are required to pay BPM. However, you may be exempt from this tax if:

  • The car is part of your belongings brought with you from your country to the Netherlands.
  • You use the car in the Netherlands the same way you did in your country (e.g., commuting to work or for recreational trips).
  • You have owned the car for at least 6 months before moving to the Netherlands.

Motor Vehicle Tax – This is an annual tax for cars, motorcycles, or other motor vehicles, payable to the tax office. The amount depends on the vehicle’s weight, fuel type, year of production, and the province you live in. Road tax must be paid by anyone who owns a vehicle and is registered as a resident in the Netherlands.

Steps to re-register a car

 1. BPM Tax Exemption

Are you planning to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 4 months? Apply to the tax office for BPM tax exemption (Vrijstelling BPM) — the tax on vehicles imported from abroad. You can find the form on the tax office’s website, which you need to download and send to them.

If your car is not exempt from BPM tax, contact us. We work with experts who can assist you with all the necessary paperwork.

2. Technical Inspection and Registration with RDW (Dienst Wegverkeer)

The next step is to schedule a technical inspection of your vehicle at a local RDW station (Dienst Wegverkeer) and register your car.

APK is the Dutch car inspection that provides you with a detailed report on the vehicle’s technical condition. A valid inspection is required to insure your car.

To register your car, you will need:

  • A document from the tax office confirming BPM tax exemption.
  • The original registration document for your car.
  • A valid ID or passport and your driver’s license.
  • Proof of residence, which you can obtain from your local municipality or city office.
  • A Technical Inspection certificate from an RDW-affiliated mechanic.

During registration, RDW will keep your original registration document, so we recommend making a copy. The registration process takes up to 5 business days, after which you’ll receive a Dutch registration card in credit card format.

Additionally, you’ll receive a special code by post, which you’ll need in case you decide to sell the car — keep it safe!

3. Dutch license plates

Once you receive the registration certificate from RDW, you need to have Dutch license plates made by a certified plate manufacturer.
